Polzeath, Cornwall

Updated: May 7, 2021

I first went to Cornwall as a kid back in the 70's, when driving anywhere was an adventure, let alone Cornwall, hundreds of miles away. We were woken up at 3 am and bundled onto the back seat of the Viva, no seatbelts, and certainly no entertainment. Much of the journey was on A roads behind countless caravans and tractors, and with each mile the sky got greyer and the clouds gathered, ready to wash away all thoughts of a sunny beach holiday. Fish and chips or pasties in the car, with a gale blowing, rain lashing down and condensation covering the windows.

Later, with my own children I had many happy holidays in Cornwall, all in Polzeath or nearby. The beach is wonderful, the waves fantastic and yes, the sun did shine, despite the clouds in the paintings.

These are the opposite sides of the bay.
